Pyotr Tchaikovsky was a student of Anton Rubinstein. In 1862, Rubinstein established the first Russian conservatory in Saint Petersburg, where he served as its first director, conductor of the orchestra and choir, and professor. Tchaikovsky studied under Rubinstein in his orchestration classes.
