Pyotr Tchaikovsky was a student of Anton Rubinstein. In 1862, Rubinstein established the first Russian conservatory in Saint Petersburg, where he served as its first director, conductor of the orchestra and choir, and professor. Tchaikovsky studied composition and orchestration under Rubinstein there, and left his post in the Ministry of Justice in 1863 at Rubinstein’s urging.
