Jean-Baptiste-Joseph Tolbecque studied composition under Antonín Rejcha at the Paris Conservatory, where Tolbecque was enrolled as a student in the early nineteenth century. Rejcha, already a renowned theorist and teacher in Paris by this time, provided Tolbecque with formal instruction in composition during the period when Tolbecque was completing his musical education, before beginning his professional career around 1820.
