Robert Volkmann studied composition under August Ferdinand Anacker during his years as a student at the teachers’ seminary from 1833 to 1835. Anacker, who served as the seminary’s musical director in Freiberg, provided Volkmann with formal instruction in composition while the young musician was also taking violin and cello lessons. This period formed Volkmann’s earliest structured training in music beyond the education he had received from his father.
