Greta Lang and Ben Smits met while both taught piano at a conservatory and married on 9 December. They formed a piano duo, performing J. Bach's concerto for two pianos in 1969 and 1970, and moved to Friesland in 1971, where they gave concerts together.
They lived in Canada and had three sons and a daughter in Ottawa. Their daughter, the cellist Pamela Smits, was born in 1968.
