Dieterich Buxtehude taught the young Nicolaus Bruhns composition and organ playing in Lübeck from 1681 to 1684. Bruhns was described as Buxtehude's favorite pupil, and Buxtehude later became an important model for him.
After completing his studies in Lübeck, Bruhns went to Copenhagen to work as deputy organist with the help of a letter of recommendation from Buxtehude.
