Mikhail Gnesin and Yevgenia Gnesina were brother and sister; Yevgenia was one of Mikhail's older sisters, and both belonged to the Gnesin family of musicians. In 1923, Mikhail joined the musical institution founded by his older sisters in Moscow as head of its creative department.
