Sophie Menter was a favored pupil of Franz Liszt and continued to refine her pianistic mastery under his guidance in Weimar beginning in 1869. In a letter in the summer of 1885, Liszt said he wanted to write a piano concerto for her using Hungarian folk music; during an autumn visit to her castle in Itter, he left her several themes that became the basis of Gypsy Tunes.
