Giacomo Carissimi → Johann von Kerll

Teacher of

Johann Caspar Kerll studied under Giacomo Carissimi in Rome around 1648–1649, having been sent there by Archduke Leopold Wilhelm of Austria during his service in Brussels. This period of study placed Kerll in direct contact with one of the leading masters of the Roman School, and Carissimi’s influence became an important component of Kerll’s later musical style, particularly in his sacred vocal works. Kerll remained in Rome only temporarily before returning to Brussels, but his studies with Carissimi formed a significant part of his early artistic development.
