Giovanni Battista Martini studied composition, particularly church music, under Giacomo Antonio Perti in Bologna. Perti, who served as chapel master of the Cathedral of San Pietro and later the Basilica of San Petronio, instructed Martini in counterpoint and exerted a significant influence on his development as a musician. This period of study occurred in Martini’s youth, before he became chapel master of the Basilica of San Francesco in 1725.
