In 1773 Georg Joseph Vogler was sponsored by the Mannheim court to travel to Bologna, where he studied under Padre Giovanni Battista Martini. During this period in Bologna, Vogler received instruction from Martini, one of the most renowned music theorists and pedagogues of the eighteenth century. Martini’s strict and scholarly approach to counterpoint and composition, rooted in the traditions of the Roman school, shaped Vogler’s early formal musical training.
