David Gershfeld was the son of the violinist and composer Grigory Isaakovich Gershfeld. David founded the Moldavian State Conservatory in 1940 and re-established it in Chișinău in 1944; Grigory taught there from 1944 and became an associate professor of violin, viola, and domra in 1946.
