Ernő Dohnányi studied at the Academy of Music in Budapest from 1893 to 1897 under Hans von Koessler (along with István Thomán).
Hans von Koessler taught composition at the Budapest National Academy of Music, and Ernő (Ernst) von Dohnányi was among his students.
