Heinrich Neuhaus was one of Alexander Slobodyanik's teachers at the Moscow Conservatory. Slobodyanik studied there under G. G. Neuhaus and later graduated from the class of V. V. Gornostayeva; he also continued at the conservatory in postgraduate study.
