Johann Paul von Westhoff received a solid musical education in Dresden as a pupil of Heinrich Schütz, who died in 1672. Schütz, serving as court composer and Kapellmeister in Dresden, provided the young Westhoff with foundational training that preceded Westhoff’s entry into the Dresden Hofkapelle in 1674.
