Charles François Gounod entered the Paris Conservatory in 1838, where he studied under Jean-François Le Sueur, Fromental Halévy, and Ferdinando Paer. Le Sueur, who taught composition, counted Gounod among his pupils and helped pass on honed composition technique to him. Le Sueur also instilled in his students an interest in musical theater, monumental choral genres, and program music.
