Jean-François Le Sueur, a professor at the Paris Conservatory, assisted Hector Berlioz when the latter decided to become a composer. While pursuing self-education, Berlioz took lessons from Le Sueur for several years. Upon entering the Paris Conservatory in 1826, Berlioz studied in Le Sueur's polyphony class. Le Sueur, who taught composition at the institution, instilled in his students, including Berlioz, an interest in musical theater, monumental choral genres, and program music.
