Ferdinand Ries studied harmony and composition under Johann Georg Albrechtsberger in Vienna. After Ries arrived in the city in early 1803, Beethoven, who had taken Ries as a pupil, sent him to Albrechtsberger for formal training in harmony and composition. Other accounts indicate that Ries worked under Albrechtsberger between 1801 and 1805, during his formative years as both a pianist and emerging composer. Under Albrechtsberger’s instruction, he received rigorous grounding in counterpoint and compositional technique, studying alongside other prominent pupils of the renowned theorist.
