Johann Nepomuk Hummel studied counterpoint under Johann Georg Albrechtsberger in Vienna beginning in 1793. His father brought him to Albrechtsberger, one of the leading contrapuntists of the Classical period and a renowned teacher whose pupils also included Beethoven. During this period Hummel devoted himself intensely to musical study, and Albrechtsberger provided him with formal training in contrapuntal technique.
