From 1795 Johann Nepomuk Hummel studied under Joseph Haydn, who introduced him more closely to the organ and played a formative role in his musical development. Haydn not only provided instruction but also dedicated to him a piano sonata, which Hummel performed with great brilliance.

Hummel’s relationship with Haydn extended beyond formal study, as Haydn later supported his career by helping him secure a position as a court musician with the Esterházy princes in 1804. Hummel held deep respect for his teacher, expressing it through works such as his piano sonata in E-flat major dedicated to Haydn.
