Issay Dobrowen studied under Leopold Godowsky abroad. This instruction took place during the period when Godowsky headed the School of Higher Mastery at the Imperial Academy of Music in Vienna, a position he held from 1909 until the start of World War I. Dobrowen undertook these studies after graduating from the Moscow Conservatory in 1911.
