In 1925, Aram Khachaturian began studying composition in Mikhail Gnesin's class at the Gnessin Third State Demonstration Music College in Moscow. In 1929, when Khachaturian entered the Moscow Conservatory, he first studied composition there under Gnesin before continuing with Nikolai Myaskovsky. After Gnesin retired, Khachaturian was invited to replace him as head of the composition department at the Gnessin State Musical-Pedagogical Institute.
