Sigismund Katz entered the Gnessin Musical Technical School in 1925 and studied composition there under Mikhail Gnesin. After a temporary expulsion for active participation in the Blue Blouse movement, he was reinstated, and after graduating from the technical school he continued for two more years in Gnesin's composition class.
