In the spring of 1929, after finishing his nine-year school, Tikhon Khrennikov wrote to Mikhail Gnesin and, after receiving a positive response, entered the Gnessin Musical College. There he studied composition with Mikhail Gnesin, while also studying piano with Efraim Gelman and polyphony with Genrikh Litinsky. Khrennikov graduated from the college in 1932.
