Vincenzo Bellini studied under Niccolò Antonio Zingarelli at the Real Collegio di Musica di San Sebastiano in Naples, where Zingarelli served as the artistic director and later became director of the conservatory. By 1822–23 Bellini had advanced into the class taught by Zingarelli, who recognized his exceptional talent and treated him with paternal encouragement, offering guidance on cultivating melodic simplicity and expressive clarity. Zingarelli used his influence to secure Bellini the prestigious opportunity to compose an opera for a gala performance at the royal theatres, which became Bellini’s early success Bianca e Gernando in 1826.
