Sergei Prokofiev was a student of Nikolai Tcherepnin in the conducting class at the St. Petersburg Conservatory. Prokofiev dedicated three compositions to his teacher: the Sinfonietta, the First Piano Concerto, and the Scherzo for four bassoons.
