Nikolai Vilinsky was a teacher of David Gershfeld. Gershfeld studied composition and music theory in Professor Vilinsky's class at the Odessa Music and Theater Institute named after Ludwig van Beethoven, entering in 1930 and graduating in 1934. After graduating, Gershfeld worked in Moldavia, where he later became director of the Chișinău Conservatory and headed the Union of Composers of Moldavia.
