Nikolai Vilinsky was the cousin of Ksenia Derzhinskaya. Vilinsky, a Ukrainian Soviet composer and music teacher, was the son of Valentina Nikiforovna Vilinskaya (née Cherkunova). Derzhinskaya, a Russian and Soviet opera singer, was the daughter of Maria Nikiforovna Derzhinskaya (née Cherkunova).
