Leonid Gurov graduated from the Odessa Conservatory in 1932 in the composition class of Nikolai Vilinsky. Gurov later served as the secretary of the Odessa Regional Branch of the Union of Composers of Ukraine from 1934 to 1940, where his teacher Vilinsky served as chairman.
