From 1923 to 1928, Vissarion Shebalin studied at the P. I. Tchaikovsky Moscow State Conservatory in the composition class of Nikolai Myaskovsky. During the 1920s, Shebalin was part of an informal association of Moscow musicians that formed around Myaskovsky, known as the "Lamm circle." The seriousness, intellectuality, and a certain academicism of Shebalin's style are noted as bringing him closer to Myaskovsky.
