In 1801, during a brief stay in Munich, Ferdinand Ries studied composition under the German opera composer Peter von Winter. At that time Ries supported himself by copying music while receiving formal instruction from Winter, whose position in Munich and reputation as a significant operatic composer provided Ries with early professional training before he continued his studies in Vienna.
