David Oistrakh was a student of Pyotr Stolyarsky. He began studying violin and viola with Stolyarsky from the age of five, initially in private lessons, and from 1923 continued under him at the Odessa Music and Drama Institute, graduating in 1926.
Stolyarsky also taught Oistrakh's future wife, Tamara Ivanovna Rotareva, and later taught Oistrakh's son Igor during the evacuation to Sverdlovsk.
