From 1871 to 1876, Iosif Kotek studied free composition (music theory) under Professor Pyotr Tchaikovsky at the Moscow Conservatory. Their friendship began during Kotek’s studies and lasted until his death in 1885. Tchaikovsky dedicated his 1877 Waltz-Scherzo to Kotek, who helped him prepare the solo part of the Violin Concerto, composed in 1878;
