In January 1902, Sergei Prokofiev was introduced to S. I. Taneyev in Moscow. Impressed by the young musician's abilities, Taneyev requested that Reinhold Glière teach him the theory of composition. In the summers of 1902 and 1903, Glière traveled to Sontsovka to give private lessons to Prokofiev.
