In 1881 Istvan Thoman entered the music academy in Budapest, where he studied under Robert Volkmann. Volkmann, who was by then an established composer and pedagogue teaching harmony and counterpoint at the Budapest Conservatory, contributed to Thoman’s formal musical education during this early formative period.
