Johann Hermann Schein studied under Rogier Michael during his years as a boy soprano in the Dresden court chapel. From 1599 to 1603 he was an alumnus of the choir of the Elector of Saxony, where Michael, serving as Kapellmeister and leader of the court ensemble, provided him with thorough musical training and recognized his exceptional talent. During this period Schein developed his vocal abilities and received his earliest formal instruction in composition and musicianship directly under Michael’s guidance.
