Mstislav Rostropovich studied cello under Semyon Kozolupov at the Moscow Conservatory. He entered the institution at the age of 16 to study in Kozolupov's class and graduated in 1946. Starting in 1948, Rostropovich served as Kozolupov's assistant at the conservatory.
