At the age of 16, Mstislav Rostropovich entered the Moscow Conservatory, where he studied composition under Sergei Prokofiev, graduating in 1946. Rostropovich later worked closely with Prokofiev on the creation of the Symphony-Concerto for Cello and Orchestra, Op. 125, and acknowledged that Prokofiev was one of the composers who had a huge influence on the formation of his personality.
