Vladimir Horowitz studied under Sergei V. Tarnovsky at the Kiev Music School, which from September 1913 was reorganized into the Kiev Conservatory. Horowitz was among Tarnovsky's students in Kiev, where Tarnovsky served as a professor at the Kiev Conservatory.
Horowitz studied with Tarnovsky as well as with V. V. Pukhalsky and F. M. Blumenfeld, and he completed his studies there in 1920, though he did not receive a diploma.
