Elena Bekman-Shcherbina studied under Vasily Safonov at the Moscow Conservatory. She joined his class following the death of her previous teacher, Pavel Pabst. She graduated in 1899 with a gold medal, having prepared the entire "Well-Tempered Clavier" for her final examination. While still a student, she began teaching at Safonov's suggestion, tutoring the young Julius Isserlis.
