Mikhail Kollontay studied piano at the Moscow Conservatory in the class of Professor Vera V. Gornostaeva, including in assistantship-internship, and graduated from the piano faculty in 1977. From 1979 he taught at the Moscow Conservatory, first as Gornostaeva's assistant.
