Vladimir Horowitz was Arturo Toscanini's son-in-law: from 1933 he was married to Wanda Toscanini, the conductor's daughter.
In early September 1939 Horowitz left for the United States together with Arturo Toscanini on one of the last steamships. In 1943 Horowitz gave a charity concert at Carnegie Hall for the needs of the war department, performing Pyotr Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 under the direction of his father-in-law Arturo Toscanini. Horowitz was buried in Arturo Toscanini's family crypt at the Monumental Cemetery in Milan.
