Nikolai Vilinsky graduated from the Odessa Conservatory in 1919, where he studied composition under Witold Maliszewski. Maliszewski was the first rector of the conservatory. The relationship between the professor and the student quickly developed into a great friendship, with Maliszewski highly valuing Vilinsky and singling him out among his students. When Maliszewski left Odessa fearing repression, he attempted to take his favorite student Vilinsky and his family into emigration with him.
