Marina Mdivani studied at the Moscow Conservatory and in postgraduate studies under Yakov Milstein and Emil Gilels. Before that, she graduated in 1955 from the ten-year music school attached to the Tbilisi Conservatory under Evgenia Chernyavskaya. Yakov Milstein taught piano at the Moscow Conservatory from 1935 and became professor there in 1963;
