Yakov Zak was one of Yevgeny Mogilevsky's teachers at the Moscow Conservatory, where Mogilevsky studied under both Heinrich Neuhaus and Zak. Zak taught at the Moscow Conservatory from 1935, became a professor there in 1947, and counted Yevgeny G. Mogilevsky among his students.
