Alexander Jarzębski (26 January 1910 – 19 December 1962) was a Polish composer and music educator. He was born in Astrakhan and died in Warsaw.
His father, violinist Józef Jarzębski, taught at the Astrakhan music school from 1909 to 1911. The family moved to Warsaw in 1911 and lived for a time in Zhytomyr.
Jarzębski graduated from the Warsaw Conservatory, where he studied with Piotr Rytel and Kazimierz Sikorski. From 1928 to 1932, he also studied history and philosophy at the University of Warsaw under Jan Karol Kochanowski. He joined the Polish Composers’ Union in 1945.
Jarzębski was best known as a teacher. He helped found the State Music Lyceum in 1950 and served as its director from 1952 until his death. Composer Zbigniew Rudziński, who took extra harmony lessons from him with Tomasz Sikorski, recalled that Jarzębski “wanted to do more and saw more than an ordinary teacher.”
He died in a Vickers Viscount plane crash in Warsaw.
