Alexander Vinnitsky is a Soviet and Russian violinist and professor. Born in 1952 in Yalta, he began his musical education in Odesa at the Stolyarsky Secondary Special Music School, studying with L. V. Mordkovich.
In 1969, the violinist David Oistrakh heard the young musician perform and invited him to continue his studies in Oistrakh's class at the Moscow Conservatory. Following Oistrakh's death, Vinnitsky undertook postgraduate study with Klimov. He later became Klimov's assistant and worked with him for ten years.
Vinnitsky won the All-Union Competition in Yerevan in 1972. In 1978, he received third prize and a special award at the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, and in 1984 he won first prize at the International Viotti Competition in Vercelli, Italy.
He is a professor in the violin department of the Moscow Conservatory. From 1997 to 2003, he was a visiting professor at the Fiesole International School of Music in Italy. Since 1987, he has also served as a visiting professor at the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, Finland.
Vinnitsky was named Honored Artist of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic in 1989 and People's Artist of Russia in 2006. His honors also include the Order of Friendship, awarded in 2013, and the Order of Honor, awarded in 2019.
