Anatoly Svechnikov
Anatoly Svechnikov was a Soviet Ukrainian composer, film composer, and music teacher. He was born in Kyiv on June 15, 1908, and died there on March 12, 1962.
He graduated from the Kyiv Music and Drama Institute in 1932, studying composition with Vasily Zolotaryov and Levko Revutsky. In 1938, he completed postgraduate studies at the Kyiv Conservatory named for Pyotr Tchaikovsky. From 1932, he headed the music departments of several drama theaters. He was musical director of dramatic broadcasts on Ukrainian Radio in 1936–1941 and 1944–1951, and taught composition and advanced counterpoint at the Kyiv Conservatory from 1945 to 1961.
Svechnikov wrote the ballets Marusia Bohuslavka (1951) and The Night Before Christmas (1959), and the symphonic poems Karmelyuk (1947) and Shchors (1949). His film credits included Inseparable Friends (1952), Pedagogical Poem (1955), Girl from the Lighthouse (1956), Partisan Spark (1957), Ivanна (1959), and Human Blood Is Not Water (1960).
He received the Stalin Prize, Third Class, in 1950 for Shchors, and was named Honored Artist of the Ukrainian SSR in 1954. His other honors included the Order of the Red Banner of Labor and the Medal for Labor Merit.
