Andreas Staier

Andreas Staier is a German pianist, keyboard player, and harpsichordist. He was born on September 13, 1955, in Göttingen, and is regarded as a prominent representative of the historically informed performance movement.

He studied in Hanover, including with Erika Haase, and in Amsterdam. From 1983 to 1986 he was a solo harpsichordist in the ensemble Musica Antiqua Köln. From 1986 he worked as a soloist and accompanist on piano with the group Les Adieux.

From 1987 to 1996 Staier taught harpsichord at the Basel conservatory Schola Cantorum. His performing activity has focused on Baroque music, especially Johann Sebastian Bach, as well as the Viennese Classicists, including Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, and Joseph Haydn, and the early Romantic repertoire.

He has also performed works by rarely heard composers, among them Jan Ladislav Dussek, Antonio Soler, Johann Nepomuk Hummel, and Muzio Clementi. As an ensemble musician, he has appeared with Anne Sofie von Otter, Alexei Lyubimov, and Christoph Prégardien.

In 2002 he received the Prize of Music Recording Critics.
