Born: OdessaDied: New York

Ania Dorfmann was an American pianist and music teacher of Russian origin. She was born in Odessa and studied there with Ilya Aizberg. In her youth, she performed in duet with Jascha Heifetz.

She later graduated from the Paris Conservatory, where she studied with Isidore Philipp, and lived in France. From 1920 onward, she toured widely across Europe, establishing an international performing career before making her American debut in 1936.

After her debut in the United States, Dorfmann increasingly recorded and taught there. She is especially associated with performances of Beethoven's First Piano Concerto and Choral Fantasy with the NBC Symphony Orchestra under Arturo Toscanini in 1939. Live recordings of both works survive, and the concerto was also recorded in the studio in 1945.

Dorfmann is regarded as the first female soloist with whom Toscanini agreed to perform. From 1966, she taught at the Juilliard School. She died in New York in 1984.
