Anton Dresden
Anton Johan Dresden (16 March 1917 – 14 May 1994) was a Dutch pianist and cellist. He was born in Amsterdam, the son of the musician Sem Dresden and the singer Jacoba Dhont, and was married to Maria Cornelia Binnendijk.
He studied at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague, qualifying to teach piano in 1939 and completing his piano-performance qualification the following year. In 1951, supported by a United States government scholarship, he studied for a time at the Juilliard School of Music in New York. He also accompanied many Dutch and international singers.
Until 1954, Dresden taught piano and choral conducting at the Rotterdam and Utrecht Conservatories, alongside Theo Bruins. He then became director of the Society for the Advancement of Music music school in Bussum and conductor of its choir and orchestra. He taught Ruud Bos and had previously taken up a conducting post in Amersfoort.
Dresden appeared several times as soloist in his father's piano concerto: with the Residentie Orchestra under Frits Schuurman in 1948; with the Concertgebouw Orchestra under Eduard van Beinum in 1948; with the Utrecht Symphony Orchestra under Willem van Otterloo in 1949; and again with the Residentie Orchestra under van Otterloo in 1955.
